Background

Originally founded as Travel Service in 1997, this airline has seen increased growth and success since it first began operating. In 2007, the airline was acquired by Icelandair Group for a 50% share, which later increased to a share of 80%.

Since then, the airline has acquired two more shareholders, including Unimex and the private investment group CEFC China Energy.

In 2017, after 20 years in operation, the carrier made the decision to change direction and officially rebranded as Smartwings. As a crucial part of the investment into the rebrand, the airline invested in a new fleet of aircraft.

A growing airline

Since first establishing, Smartwings has had great success, growing year on year financially, in fleet size and also the number of passengers that they carry. Additionally, as a group, the Smartwings business has also invested a 98% share into one of the oldest airlines in the world, Czech Airlines.

The airline regularly operates flights to over 100 + destinations, including Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, France, Greece, the Canary Islands and Israel. As well as specialising in wet and dry leases to other airlines.

Safety, Training and Assessment

Smartwings takes pride in operating to the very highest level of safety and ensures it is a high priority throughout the business - “Flying is a matter of trust, and safety is a parameter to which the Smartwings Group gives the greatest possible attention.”

The carrier operates in accordance with the European Union rules and has also met the requirements for Federal Aviation Administration for flying in the United States. They have also successfully been audited by both the IATA and IOSA regulators.

Due to the airline's high level of safety, all staff are trained to the highest standard to comply with European Union and US rules and therefore only employee Pilots and Crew with the highest level of experience and qualifications.

All training is rigorous and Pilots should expect the interview process and assessments to test their piloting skills to their maximum ability.
