Executive Search for an Airline’s Chief Financial Officer
Business Type: Airline
Location: Papua New Guinea
Our client, a national airline, required a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to replace their outgoing contract CFO, with the search being led by the airline’s CEO. Having worked closely with Samantha over the past year, the client was already familiar with GOOSE Recruitment’s high-touch approach.
Competing against three generalist search firms, GOOSE stood out by demonstrating flexibility and a customised search strategy precisely aligned with the client’s unique requirements and preferred processes, ultimately securing their confidence and partnership for the search.
The Challenge
The client needed a high-calibre CFO with a proven track record in financial accounting, extensive airline experience, and the gravitas to step directly into a senior role - requiring someone already operating at this level, willing to relocate and drive the airline’s financial strategy from day one.
The primary challenge was finding a candidate willing to relocate who demonstrated long-term stability in their career, as the client sought to avoid hiring someone with a history of frequent job changes and prioritised continuity in their professional background.
The Solution
1. Client Needs Assessment
We began with an in-depth discussion with the client, focusing on confirming that their requirements for the CFO role remained consistent. This meeting also included negotiations regarding the terms of the project to ensure alignment on expectations.
2. Market Mapping & Candidate Sourcing
We conducted extensive market research to evaluate the availability of CFO talent within the airline sector. We analysed industry trends, competitor organisations, and potential talent pools to identify the specific qualifications and experiences necessary for success in the role.
By leveraging our established network and insights from previous executive searches, we pinpointed candidates with proven track records in financial leadership and a deep understanding of the airline industry.
3. Proactive Candidate Engagement
Utilising GOOSE Recruitment’s branding, we actively reached out to targeted candidates, emphasising the unique opportunity to lead and transform the airline's financial strategy and vision, thereby generating interest among top-tier talent.
4. Comprehensive Interviews
We conducted detailed interviews to assess candidates thoroughly, presenting the client’s value proposition and evaluating each candidate's fit for the role based on their skills, experience, and alignment with the company’s culture.
5. Refined Shortlist
Following multiple interview rounds, we presented a carefully curated shortlist of highly qualified candidates, showcasing individuals from various regions and international markets. We also arranged for a weekend visit for one candidate to explore the area in preparation for their potential relocation.
6. Final Selection & Offer Management
We supported the client throughout the final interview process and offer management stages, ensuring a seamless transition for the candidate during their notice period and up to their start date.
The Results
The search successfully identified a highly experienced CFO with a robust background in multiple global airlines, including government-owned carriers. The candidate's contract had recently concluded, making them exceptionally flexible regarding relocation. They expressed genuine enthusiasm for the airline and the opportunity to contribute to its financial strategy and growth, aligning perfectly with the client’s needs.
